ESSAY PROMPT

Use this open-ended response to share a meaningful quality, experience, or perspective not already explained elsewhere in your application. Make a clear case for what it reveals about your potential, supporting that case with a specific example and honest reflection. Avoid repeating an activities list or making unsupported claims; the model should illustrate personal writing without posing as an accepted student's essay.

I used to think being thoughtful meant finding the strongest argument and defending it. That changed during a class discussion about whether a school should restrict phone use. I arrived ready to argue for a strict ban, convinced that fewer distractions would help everyone. Then a classmate described using a phone to coordinate a ride when a family member’s schedule changed. I realized my confident answer had treated one common experience as if it were everyone’s.

“I realized my confident answer had treated one common experience as if it were everyone’s.”

This sentence identifies the assumption that changed, giving the example a clear point of reflection rather than presenting the discussion as a simple success story.

Instead of repeating my original point, I asked what problem the proposed rule was meant to solve and whether a narrower policy could address it. I listened as classmates raised concerns about interruptions, emergencies, and enforcement. I wrote those concerns down, then suggested that the class compare a full ban with limits during instruction and clear exceptions. I did not have enough information to know which policy would work best, so I stopped presenting my first preference as settled.

The writer acknowledges uncertainty while explaining a specific response to it: shifting from advocacy to inquiry.

The discussion did not produce a final policy, and I cannot claim that my suggestion changed anyone’s mind. What changed was my understanding of what useful participation requires. Asking questions did not mean avoiding a position; it helped me see what a position would need to account for. I still believed distractions deserved attention, but I could no longer treat restriction as a simple solution without considering how a rule might affect students differently.

I would bring that willingness to examine my assumptions into a new community. When people disagree, I want to identify the concern beneath each position, ask whose circumstances are missing, and revise my thinking when the answer demands it. I will not always reach agreement or find a perfect solution. But I can contribute more responsibly when I listen before concluding and make room for details that challenge my first interpretation. That habit—not certainty—is the quality I hope to keep developing.

The conclusion connects the example to a lasting quality without claiming that one discussion proves expertise or guarantees future success.

Why this response works

The essay names a specific quality—curiosity expressed through listening and reconsideration—and demonstrates it through one focused discussion. The writer describes a concrete action, distinguishes what changed internally from what cannot be claimed about the outcome, and connects the reflection to future participation. For your own response, choose a real moment you can describe accurately, then show both what you did and what you learned.

A CLOSER LOOK

The revision, explained

BEFORE

I am a curious and responsible person who always wants to help my community.

AFTER

When people disagree, I want to identify the concern beneath each position, ask whose circumstances are missing, and revise my thinking when the answer demands it.

The revision replaces broad, unsupported traits with specific habits that the essay illustrates and that could matter in a new community.

NOW IT’S YOUR TURN

Try the idea.

Recall a real moment when someone’s perspective complicated your first opinion. In four short paragraphs, identify the quality the moment reveals, describe what you did, reflect honestly on what changed and what remains uncertain, and explain how you would carry that quality into a new community. Which details can you state as fact, and which are your interpretation?

A strong response names a focused quality, develops it through one concrete moment and action, and reflects on the limits of what the experience proves. It connects the quality to future participation without exaggerating the outcome.
